So close you could reach out and touch it; Apollo Mining Corporation's new orbital base of operations is barely above at 10km altitude to minimise fuel wastage lifting from the surface

    Mercury One-Man Space Station

    Mercury One-Man Space Station

In the early 1960's, a one-man space station concept was proposed by McDonnell Aircraft based on Mercury hardwear. The design consisted of a Mercury spacecraft mounted atop a mission module/laboratory on an Agena B upper stage, which would've been launched on an Atlas rocket.

However, there was one problem: the mission module could not connect to the Mercury spacecraft through its heatshield, as the heatshield has the Mercury's solid motors mounted to the back. Therefore, three solutions were proposed: the astronaut would do an EVA and access the module from the exterior, an inflatable tunnel would be inflated that would allow passage from the outside of the spacecraft, and my personal favorite, the Mercury spacecraft would be on a hinge that would allow it to dock to the side of the lab.

This station did not make it past the drawing boards for obvious reasons, but I love the craziness of having the entire Mercury on a hinge!
