Sometimes I look back at old screenshots and say "yeah, that was awesome!" Sometimes I look back at old screenshots and say "what the heck was I thinking??" Anyway, this mess is the first space station I ever designed, six years ago.

Tired of my 12 and 8 year old wasting their days during the pandemic so I paid them both $20 to put a Kerbin of their choice into orbit.

After spending a couple weeks attempting and failing to motivate my boys to be productive I decided to offer them $20 to put a Kerbal into orbit by themselves. I gave them a walk through of the basics and showed them a couple Scott Manley Youtube videos (love his stuff). At first they seemed overwhelmed but I was patient and taught them a bit more about the design (i.e. thrust to weight ratio, orbital terms, retrograde and prograde burns etc). Today, with my help they put Jebediah in orbit and while they were cheering about earning their $20 I let them know that they hadn't fulfilled the initial agreement, namely putting a Kerbal in orbit by themselves.

Not to be dissuaded and tasting victory at hand they worked through a few beginner mistakes (burning to an apoapsis of 70km vice ~80km, steep re-entry, etc) and made it further with each attempt. Each time I'd walk away and say, call me when you're in orbit, or call me when you've landed.

I heard them cheering in the basement and after a sporty re-entry Jebediah had safely landed. I brought my wallet with me and handed them a couple crisp $20s. My youngest son looked as his brother and said "I wonder how much will Dad pay us to get to the Mun?"

    Winning.
