    Ode to the Mastadon

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 06:09 AM PDT

I'm currently playing career mode, and found the Mastadon to be an absolute life-saver, and most people probably don't even know about it. It's just a weird sub-par Mainsail with 90% of the thrust, why would anyone use that?

    Cost.

    And engine clusters.

Any rocket dumps 90% of its funds into what gets it into orbit and another 10% into what actually ends up in orbit and can thus go places. Maybe that ratio can go up to 80/20 when doing long range transfers to Eve, Duna or Jool, but the point mainly stands. And lifter stages are the worst offenders in that.

    Okay, let's compare then.

    Mainsail: Mastadon Ratio
    1379/1500 kN 1283/1350 kN 93%/90%
    285/310 isp 290/305 isp 101%/98%
    6t 5t 85%
    13,000 funds 8,000 funs 61%

So we get an engine that has ~93% of the thrust at surface level, with more efficiency and only 8% of the weight for about 60% of the price. That's one hell of a bargain, but that's not the only reason this is good.

Let's say we need a specific amount of thrust in that lifter stage, say 22,000 kN total at surface level, how many of each engine do we need?

    15.9 Mainsails or 17.14 Mastadons.

Lets round these numbers to 16 and 17, as we will never have round numbers. It will skew results a little, but I'll give unrounded numbers just for fun, even if we dont have 0.14 Mastadons anywhere.

With Mainsails we end up with 96 tons of engine costing 208.000 funds. Mastadons on the other hand are only 85 tons 136.000 funds. Not only cheaper, but having less mass to haul around improves efficiency. It's like putting an Ant on a small probe instead of a Spark, even if the Spark has higher isp, the Ant will get more dV due to the weight difference.

Unrounded this would be 95.4t and 206.700 funds for Mainsails and 85.7t and 137.000 funds. Still a marked difference.

For an engine that is sitting around the list with such unremarkable stats that, up to recently, I never gave it much thought at all, this is a surprising result. There are definitely similar comparisons to be made with Rhinos and a cluster of Wolfounds, if TWR isnt a priority, nevermind absolutely lavishly priced Mammoths or Vectors.
